It all started when a friend gave me a pair of Normal Greys named Boogs and Sweet Pea. This was in the fall of 1993. I was hooked, got bird fever and within 10 years was up to around 800 tiels. over the years my birds have taught me so much and it is my turn to Pay It Forward and share what they taught me, from the tears of pain and joy. Over the years I've been on many bird groups, written eBooks, etc. how I wound up starting this forum is because if your familiar with Facebook when they don't like the truth that goes against the narratives you get timeout, a.k.a Facebook Jail. Been there and done it many times. I was also an helper and Admin of Karen Morris's Cockatiel and Parakeets Central FB group. Between not being able to post or do my admin job to her group having some members reporting the group to shut it done I decided , and Karen thoughts on the same page we need a safe space to talk about our feathered friends. So I came up with this. We are still learning how to setup and do everything. if you look at the menu bar there is Help....you can click on it to familiarize yourself on how to use this forum. Aside from this, Welcome and enjoy!

I started about 25 years ago when a collague told me that she could no longer keep her lutino cockatiel and amazon, due to health reasons. They came here and that s how my addiction started. I worked for an anamail refuge and got more tiels and parrots offered ...

Hi, my name is Genie and I'm a bird lover! I have recently bought home a 9 weeks old albino cockatiel. by the third week, she begin to display sleepiness and fluffed up feathers. I was scared to death. I keep posting on different forums, and research on the internet, I finally came across Susanne Russo's name and I think one of the diagram and photos have identified my birdy's problem. I already took her to the vet, but they are slow on identifying her problems and the result of the test is not coming back in time. I finally found this website on facebook, and hope you can reply or contact me to help me out. I'm so worried about my now 12 weeks old cockatiel and she is hanging on her life on a daily basis. Someday she will be fine, someday she will be extra tired. I really really need some help.
Ok, so here is her problem. I bought her home not knowing much about cockatiel's behavior. ( I only have parrotlets and budgies) I was told she is a hungry eater. She loves to eat and her chest is puffed. On the day of bringing her home, the breeder told me I should constrain her from eating for 24 hours. Not knowing what she means, I tried not to feed her, but did a little bit of feeding before she sleeps.
The next 2 weeks, she is a heavy chirpy little bird. We gave her pellets, and she is a happy eater. I starting to notice her chest is so big , sometimes I can see the feather not be able to cover her chest. So I peeked and see a big yellow lump. I start to do research. I thought it was a fat lump, but not sure. She keeps behaving fine. Until one day, she start to getting really really tired. My partner keep feeding her and on that day, she was not even making any sound and her crop was hard. We called the breeder and ask for help.(It was thanksgiving and there are no vet She kindly came over and squeezed out the food from her chest. I know this is dangerous, but birdy was on the verge of dying, so I have to take a chance. After bird vomit the food out, she was chirping again in 30 mins . We reframed her from eating the next day and took her to the vet. We did some tests and the result came back saying she has bacterial and fungal infections. She is on meds now. But her crop is still digesting very low. She has been on antibiotic for 3 days, today is the fourth day. We just got the fungal medicine. So far, she has 1 dose of fungal infection meds.
I am very scare to feed her more food because her crop is quite big right now. I don't know what to do. Should I feed her until her crop is too full? Or should I wait until her crop empty first before I start to feed her again? Does she needs a crop flush? Does that help?
Good thing is, she has never stop asking for food. She also eat way too fast which scare me as well.
Hope someone here can help me out. Today is Oct-19-2023 @ 2:30pm Eastern time.
Thanks.
